At this rate the oil companies and OPEC will ask for a tax payer bail out next.

Drop that crude oil price, US Fuel Demand Drops Further. And, crude oil drops for a 6th straight day, 7th, 8th, 9th… ‘Below $40 a barrel in the next 6 months.’ What goes around, comes around OPEC!!!!

Wow, if oil goes below $40 a barrel, that would put gas prices around what they were 15 years ago!!

I heard that crude oil bottomed out under $45/bbl this morning. Good news. Oh, and that idiot Hugo Chavez has to be crying the blues. After all, he promised all these social services to his people. But they were predicated on oil being at least $120/bbl forever more. And of course, what goes up, must come down. I'm glad Chavez has managed to screw himself!

" the engine of capitalism is stuck right now"
Nope, it's not stuck. Sure the market is down which contributes in turn drive the oil down. BUT maybe just maybe the over-inflated prices at the pump early this year got more people to think about using less, and other new items say we where on a three year decline in fuel demand currently. This means we were on a declining demand when you used a good market to send the price up. So you raised the price as high as possible while you could and drove demand down more. I only hope we can keep the demand declining.
You reap what you sow.

<$40 a barrel would be good. Is the measure of a thriving economy the amount of oil that is consumed? Can we not conserve and still have a productive, growing economy?

I was reading where we might see $1 a gallon again in 2009.
That'd be nice.
I never expected gas to drop back down to $2...it's $1.6X in my area.

We conserve and oil prices drop. Just think what would happen if we started drilling more at home AND if our government would establish a national energy independence policy. Just don't leave the Chris Dodds and Barney Franks in charge. Look how well they watched our mortgage lenders.

For years we were told demand was up while it was actually down and now we are told it is both up and down.
The truth is that demand is at about the same level as it was for 2001 or 2002. We were supposed to keep increasing demand and we did not.
So, when you see the story that demand is up compared to a year ago, remember that it is still way, way off from where it was projected to be and much lower than it was 5 years ago.
